Lions Club Assists Those in Need

Four tractor trailers full of food sounds like a lot, but to families in need it is just enough.

An unemployment rate above 15 percent means the number of unemployed in Cleveland County is still hovering above 7,000.

For the first time this year the Shelby Lions Club took to the Cleveland County fair grounds this morning to give food to those less fortunate.

Tuesday the organization distributed food to 2,400 families through churches and other agencies and Wednesday morning they expected another 200 to walk through the door.

According to Food Distribution Chairman, J.D. Baldree, they received 128,500 pounds of food, enough to feed 3,000 families or close to 8 thousand people.

Cars were lined up outside the fair grounds before 6 a.m. and the line would grow to more than 100 people before Lion's Club members could begin registering individuals.

This time last year the organization only received about 85,000 pounds of food, today.

Wednesday the Lions Club gave away 15 items, ranging from peaches and pears to canned beef and chicken.
